HVAC

With all the work that I've been doing to prepare the kitchen move, I am anxious to rip out our gas furnace!!! It's in the way of our island and in the way of the flow and feeling the kitchen will soon have therefore, I can't wait till either we get a full fledged HVAC central unit installed or till it's warm enough where we don't have to use it!

We started getting quotes last week from a couple companies recommended to me and so far we got one back with was on the higher end of our price spectrum...It was actually higher than I'm comfortable spending. I do realize we have no ducts therefore they will have create all new ones but I think I can do better...

Hope to get more quotes soon!

Bungalow Love

Two HGTV feature articles on bungalows! Worth a read if you're not quite sure what's so special about them:

Helene Cragg is back at it again, saving more houses and in the end result, making some good money while doing so. Helena bought the bungalows that I LOVED in the Cleveland-Holloway neighborhood a while back in 2008 and rehabbed them to their beautiful existence today, keeping a lot of the character intact on them meanwhile modernizing them a bit. They both sold in no time, heartbreaking to me because I wanted either of the houses before they got rehabbed and was close to working out a deal with Helena but could not get rid of our current town home so we were stuck...

Well go forward a year now and Helena is back at it again, agreeing to buy the 2 bungalows in Morehead Hill under extinction and plans to move them to Old North Durham. Great news all around not only for Morehead Hill residents but also for Old North Durham as it will fill empty lots currently available in Old North. One of the lots I know exactly as I drive by it everyday and is right next to a lovely little red bungalow. Based on her previous work, I'm 100% sure those bungalows will look awesome once completed and will do justice not only to those homes, but also to old North Durham. Hope the plan goes through!!

This past weekend was a very eventful weekend for myself. It was a weekend in which I was looking forward to since we bought this house. Moving my kitchen to its glory days location...An event like this is very historic for this house as it begged to have its kitchen back in its old location...It's been an event that has been years in the making...For myself, it's an event that's been months in the making...

A lot of planning and mental energy has gone into this job. When we first bought this house, we were definitely not sold on because of this kitchen. For one, it's an addition that is all the way in the back of the house making the kitchen an impersonal area. Secondly, the design layout does not flow...it's horrible! For a couple of months after moving in, I kept thinking of how we would plan our kitchen layout. I did not like the ideas I was coming up with though! What I realized was that I did not like the kitchen being so separated from the house therefore any plan that I thought of, was not satisfying to me...Then a bulb flashed in my head when I went to the Old West Durham home tour, a home tour meant to glorify the smaller homes, bigger happy idea...I got it! Move the kitchen back to its old location!!!! GREAT IDEA!!!! That would give me all the space in the old kitchen to move the laundry room back there and create a new bathroom which this house needs!!! I was so psyched about my new plan and thanked the home tour for it...

So now for the past 6 months, I have been jotting things down as I got ideas, getting ideas from old home tours in town, going over This Old House and Cottages & Bungalows magazines, looking through many websites for kitchen design ideas. It's been mentally exhausting but I also love it as I always enjoy a challenge...You see, for this kitchen to work, we will have to very creative. Why you ask, well the kitchen is tiny! Something my wife and I love! Small kitchen design is something cherished in places like Europe where appliances are made for those markets due to their limited spaces. It's not the typical American ideology but I feel with enough charm and character and good flow, a small kitchen can be more effective than a spaced out kitchen.

There are many factors that has limited the potential in this kitchen though. For one, it is too closed in. So the first plan was to knock down the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. An idea that has been done MANY times over from people looking for that "open concept". So this past weekend, I proceeded with the first phase, knocking down half the wall and creating arches for an open feel...With the help from a good neighbor, Patrick, who helped me get the project started and two Old North Durham residents, Peter, who insisted on helping me with the framing & Moe who helped rerun the electrical, we were able to knock down the plaster and create the archway the right way. Sure enough, here are some pictures from the first phase (more pics on my flickr page):

Ok, OK...So, I've been slacking big time on getting posts up on here...In the next few weeks though, I will make it up with extra posts to make up for the lack of posts...

Some of the updates to come are our guest bedroom. The weather finally got nice enough for us to paint our second hand furniture for that bedroom and we got to work. It is now finally a nice, pleasing guest bedroom where were not afraid to show it off...Pics and updates to come on that...

Second, we decided to get down and dirty on what I think will be the biggest project we will ever take on this house, moving the kitchen from the back room to the new location the old original location the kitchen used to be at when this house was designed. This is a very exciting project for me because I have been picturing what our kitchen will look like in my head for about a year now and have finally started it this past weekend. Pics to come with updates as well!!!

After a bit of a hiatus and slowing down on working on the house, we are ready to start getting motivated to work on our kitchen...I origianlly wantedt o start working on our kitchen but after family and wife started telling me I need to slow down and focus on life a bit more, I decided to slow down and live life a bit...Now that I have been doing that, I feel like I have been lazy...It's not necessarily the case but I'm sucha busy body that when I sit back a bit, I feel like a lazy a$$. Well, I'm back at it and back to focus on our kitchen! At least thinking about it again and planning things out...

Red Tailed Hawks!!!

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 |

While at the Northgate Dog park this weekend, I heard one of the most unusual animals noises I have ever heard in my life. It sounded amazing and loud! I kept looking in the direction it came from when I noticed this unusually large bird fly to a branch. I thought, I have to see this thing up close!!!

I took my dogs out of park and decided to start walking in the direction the bird was. I got close enough to see a better shot of this thing but could not tell what it was. Then it flew off!!! Luckily for me, it flew to a branch was closer to the walkway. I walked over and got an awesome view of what I later figured to be as a Barred Owl. I've never seen an owl in the wild like that and it was an amazing feat for me!!! The sound this thing made was one of the most amazing calls I've ever heard in my life.

Ever since seeing this thing so close to my house, I have been looking up quite often, especially since neighbors in my listserve mentioned there are a few that live in the neighborhood. They also mentioned there are a good number of Red Tailed Hawks in the area...Well, yesterday morning, as I looked up in the trees in my backyard while letting our dogs out, I spotted some kind of large bird just hanging out!

I could not tell what it was so I decided to get my camera out and zoom in on it. After taking some shots, I found it was rather mature Red Tailed Hawk. You can tell it's young based on the short tail feathers and the coloration of it. Amazing! I love seeing wildlife thrive! Here are the shots I took:
